Recording our Second Album

[Note: McKenna will be posting regular updates here at the site to document and share the process of making the new record.]

Last night we made it over to Blackbird and got some basic setup done. We loaded in instruments and amps, got things arranged in a general way. We moved the drum kit to where we think it should be, and set up around it. We’ve got Brownie and Scott’s amps set up in isolation, and Enos will line in direct from the bass amp.

One major difference in the way we’ll record this time is that we’ll be tracking everything at once—drums, bass, guitars— as opposed to fully layered like we did on Autumn (and also on the singles Song for Mary, 44º North, Olivia, and Middle Child). We feel like it will be a more realistic, more organic recording of our songs. I guess we’ll see if we’re right…

We’re not 100% sold yet on which songs will make it in…but we’ve got 15-20 to work from. It'll be a matter of hearing everything and deciding what sounds best and what fits together.

Here are a few photos from last night’s setup.
